What’s in the name of our copyediting business, Wise Directions?
In essence, it draws inspiration from William Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 2. The play traces the journey of Prince Hal, the Prince of Wales, as he transforms from a wayward and rebellious youth into a discerning and far-sighted monarch, Shakespeare’s King Henry V.
The phrase “wise directions” appears in Henry IV, Part 2 following the death of King Henry IV, when Hal is crowned King Henry V (Act 5, Scene 2).
At this pivotal moment, the new king chooses to embrace the Lord Chief Justice, a senior royal adviser, as a symbolic father. This decision marks a decisive turning point, accelerating his transformation from unruly prince to judicious ruler:
You shall be as a father to my youth,
My voice shall sound as you do prompt mine ear,
And I will stoop and humble my intents
To your well-practised, wise directions.
The “wise directions” to which the young King Henry refers symbolise his embrace of discipline, maturity, responsibility, and the rule of law. At the same time, they signal a decisive break from the idleness, mischief, and playful irreverence of his youth, much of it spent in taverns among disreputable company.
