Key takeaway: As the Asia-Pacific grows, more writers, businesses and organisations are using English to reach global audiences. Copyediting and proofreading help ensure that this writing is clear, confident and professional, whether it appears in manuscripts, websites, reports or business documents.

Introduction

Copyediting and proofreading, in essence, aim to improve someone else’s writing.

There is no shortage of demand for these skills.

With improvements in global literacy rates, population growth, and economic expansion, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, copyeditors and proofreaders are needed now more than ever.

The rise of the Asia-Pacific middle classes

Let us set the scene. With improved literacy and numeracy, coupled with population growth, we have already begun to witness the exponential growth of economies that had long been dormant. Take China, for example. China’s economic reforms, coupled with globalisation and digitalisation, have fuelled a fast-growing middle class.

Following China’s example, other emerging economies with large and youthful populations, including India and Indonesia, have also seen significant growth in their middle classes. Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam have also experienced exponential economic growth, driven by the rapid expansion of a middle class.

Numerous reports suggest that by 2030, two of every three middle-class consumers will be from Asia. These consumers are driving demand and shaping global consumption patterns across sectors such as digital technology, trade, tourism, education, health and wellness, and infrastructure.

English in the global marketplace

They are also keen to engage in the global marketplace using what has become the international language, English.

Having said that, we need to remember that the middle class across the Asia-Pacific is not a homogeneous mass. Across the region, we are witnessing the emergence of many different middle classes, with vastly different economic and cultural backgrounds.

It is in this context that Australia can supply these growing regional economies with services, whether it be education, natural resources, high-quality agricultural products, and, ahem, good copy.

How Wise Directions can help

This is where Wise Directions comes in.

On the one hand, much of the world’s population speaks English as a native language. On the other hand, not everyone, especially in Asia-Pacific emerging economies, can claim English as a first language. Even fluent English speakers struggle with the nuances of grammar and syntax if English is not their native tongue.

There is no shame in this! Given differing levels of education and the complexity of the English language, even native speakers of English struggle to express themselves clearly, concisely and confidently (or should we say, with clarity, concision and confidence?).

With so much text produced every day by authors of varying levels of English fluency, there is a real need for copyediting and proofreading. With the phenomenal growth of the World Wide Web, which is a repository of text and other media, this need is more pronounced than ever.
